Pedestrians, Public Transport and Climate Change in Karachi
October 2024
Karachi’s commuters face countless challenges in terms of access, quality and affordability of public transport. However, rapid urbanisation and climate change have gone on to intensify these challenges.
The public transport system in Karachi remains heavily neglected, plagued by outdated infrastructure and an insufficient number of vehicles and accelerating impacts of climate change.
Policymakers must acknowledge that improving public transport isn't just about adding more buses; it involves a more systemic transformation of the entire commuting experience.
For lower hanging fruit, a commitment must be made to remove commercial encroachments from pavements, to resist road widening and to add shade to pedestrian pathways. Civil society can step in and use technologies to map out where these interventions are most urgently needed. Pressure on local governments and institutions like K-Electric to make their infrastructure safer during climate events is also welcome. Transparency must also be demanded in the expenditure of funds acquired in the name of climate adaptation and mitigation.
